Market analysts agree in their view: “Major industrial activities are moving to the cloud” (Forrester); "It seems that the Industrial IoT is where the future lies and no industrial company wants to be left behind" (Roland Berger); "The new report indicates a predictive maintenance market of $11 billion by 2022, driven by IoT technology and new services" (IoT Analytics). When it comes to implementing digital transformation in the industry, however, the ideas are not so clear. The doubts are usually the same for all managers: Where do we start, better to update internal processes first and then acquire new skills and technologies or vice versa? Is growth with internal "make" investments more promising or the acquisition of external "buy" solutions? How do I choose suppliers? Better the certainty of a large group or the dynamism of an economic start-up? And while the action is postponed, customers begin to ask for something and solutions must be improvised without coordination between the various stakeholders and without a strategy.
In this paper we analyse the importance of a shared ecosystem between suppliers and users for the realization of industrial IoT and Cloud solutions, which seems to be the most promising approach for transforming business into digital.
